On July 14 2021, the Innovation Department team deployed its JPTech solution for mobile and outdoors augmented reality for broadcast at the Satory military camp for the production of two live sequences presented by Nicolas Chateauneuf to present the future French army tools during the morning special program on France 2.

After the success of Roland Garros, our engineers are continuing the experiment...

After the implementation of RA sequences to introduce the Men and Women finalists for the French Open in partnership with the Sports Department, the Innovation team has this time put its augmented reality solution in mobility and outdoors at the service of the Information Department for the special morning program of July 14 on France 2. The goal of these sequences was to present future equipment that will support the French Army in the coming years : Eurodrone, SCAF (Air Combat System of the Future) and Virtual Map.

The 3D elements were provided by the army and its partners and were adapted by La Factory to be then integrated into animated sequences in the real-time 3D engine Unity to serve as a visual and pedagogic support for the journalist’s explanations.

... and take innovation a step further

The Innovation Department has improved the robustness of its solution and its reliability to enable these sequences to be produced live on France 2. The Oculus Quest virtual reality headset used in this set up for tracking the position has been attached to the camera with a custom-made rigid tether. This camera and the headset are then mounted on a Ronin stabilizer, equipment regularly used by France Télévisions production teams to make shots in motion. This equipment helps to keep the camera stable while the cameraman moves, and prevents the camera and headset from shaking for smooth movements. This makes it easier to integrate elements in augmented reality into the image and provides a better final result.

This second series of AR sequences confirms the relevance of this solution for the broadcast for outdoors, in mobility and even live content. The next step will consist in integrating this system into the production pipelines of France Télévisions in order to make its use possible, simply and regularly, for the various editorial staff.
