The First Sandbox Hub at VRT with France tv, BBC and Sveriges Radio

Open Innovation
Published on February 15, 2018

On February 8, 2018, the first "Sandbox Hub" workshop hosted by VRT took place. Immersed in the Sandbox of the Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroeporganisatie, the BBC, France Télévisions and Swedish Radio worked on Open Innovation and exchanged best practices for collaboration with start-ups.

This meeting signals the start of the "Sandbox Hub" project, one of the pillars of the European MediaRoad initiative led by the EBU, which brings together European public broadcasters, research institutes and independent producers.

The Sandbox Hub concept is based on VRT's award-winning "Sandbox", and is also inspired by other initiatives, such as the BBC Taster, which offers a creative and experimental ground for start-ups.

Sarah Geeroms, the project manager: "As Flemish public television, we have an obligation to remain agile and improve our connection with the audience through continuous service improvement. Thanks to this project we can build a European network and support a strong and innovative European media industry".

Each Sandbox works independently, they are connected to each other by a platform that shares success stories and feedback for wider project implementation.

The full summary of the two days of work is available onthe Sandbox Hub blog

Final test before launching automatic subtitling of franceinfo

Closed captions are produced everyday for the French public news channel, from 6 to 9 AM and from 9 PM to midnight. In addition, on France TV website and applications, franceinfo will receive automatic subtitling thanks to an Artificial Intelligence during the rest of the day.

We'll keep it, tweak it, or
remake it—you decide!
