NOWU, you for the environment

Transformation
Published on August 26, 2021

The preservation of ecosystems and the fight against climate change are among the major challenges of the 21st century. 67% of young Europeans* even consider that the environmental crisis should become THE priority of the European Union.

France Télévisions and the Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln (WDR) have thus launched NOWU, a digital and European media which aims to provide tools and concrete solutions to these young people, so that they can act facing the environmental emergency.

The offer includes a common website, which will be launched at the beginning of September, with content that both countries will share, as well as two Instagram accounts, one French @nowu_frand one German @nowu_de. The media may spread on other social networks in the future.

Information, interaction, wondering and solutions-sharing are core values of the editorial line. NOWU seeks interaction and dialogue with its community, through quizzes, polls, calls for testimonials, etc.

NOWU also aims to limit its own environmental impact. The website's architecture as long as the contents have been designed to reduce as much as possible their energy consumption. This philosophy results in concrete technical, functional and marketing choices that have been made, such as setting a weight limit for images.

The team will continue to seek improvement. The impact of future functionalities will thus be evaluated and integrated into the overall carbon footprint of the medium.

Final test before launching automatic subtitling of franceinfo

Closed captions are produced everyday for the French public news channel, from 6 to 9 AM and from 9 PM to midnight. In addition, on France TV website and applications, franceinfo will receive automatic subtitling thanks to an Artificial Intelligence during the rest of the day.

We'll keep it, tweak it, or
remake it—you decide!
