Next-Generation Media: Meta-Media's trend book for understanding the impact of generative AI on information

Just over a year ago, global tech giants, led by Mark Zuckerberg before quietly backtracking in March of this year, promised us a new future that would allow everyone the leisure of venturing into alternate worlds, adopting desired identities, and connecting to the world like never before through the Metaverse. Since November last year, a completely different innovation has been shaking up the world of tech and beyond, as this technology is much more democratizable (and already democratized) than the Metaverse. As you may have easily guessed, we are referring to generative AI!

This disruption, which affects numerous fields, particularly media and information, lies at the heart of the 22nd Trend book from Meta-Media, a collective blog by France Télévisions that decodes trends to understand the media and journalism of tomorrow.

In 2013, Meta-Media's Trend book described the algorithms that would dominate our connected lives. In 2019, the blog publication by France Télévisions provided an overview of the use cases of AI throughout the entire media value chain. Today, Artificial Intelligence is no longer merely predictive but also generative. It has become a full-fledged content producer and, consequently, a media content producer as well.

Faced with a deluge of hyper-realistic content created by armies of AI, our relationship with reality will inevitably be disrupted. With generative AI, we go beyond truth, beyond the looking glass, or simply put, into deception.

The changes brought about by generative AI are already being compared to those of the Industrial Revolution. They are disrupting the media and pushing them to quickly address numerous questions about their profession and practices. Among them:

  •  What are the real capabilities of these technologies and their impacts on the production and dissemination of information?
  • Have we entered the era of post-truth?
  • How can we turn it into an ally rather than an enemy of our democracies?
  • How can we ensure that generative AI does not further reinforce citizens' distrust of the news media and feed disinformation networks?
  • How can we encourage generative AI to cite its sources to increase transparency?
  • Can news media, which are currently the breeding ground for these AIs, assert their rights?
  • How can we collectively evolve and learn to master this tool in order to create more value and trust?

Under the direction of Kati Bremme, who notably signs the introduction to the Trend book, the publication brings together media specialists (Charlie Beckett, Benoît Raphaël, Francesco Marconi), scientists (Asma Mhalla, Françoise Soulié-Fogelman, Laurence Devillers, Cédric Villani), sociologists (Yann Ferguson), legal experts (Perrine Pelletier, Martin Bieri), and creatives who share their vision of generative AI and decipher the media buzz surrounding this technology, whose disruptive power is already comparable to that of personal computers and smartphones.

This Trend book is not only aimed at media and AI experts but also serves as an educational and entertaining tool. Inside, you will find a glossary to familiarize yourself with this new jargon, a photo reportage from the future, a detailed mapping of AI use cases, guides for appropriate use, book recommendations, and even plays. This accessibility to a wide audience is also an editorial choice, as we can only make generative AI a positive tool for our society if we understand it and learn to use it correctly—for what it truly is and not for what we project onto it.

InnoDay: a day to discover all of France Télévisions' innovations

On November 14, the InnoDay, France Télévisions' innovation fair, took place at our headquarters. The day was packed with conferences, presentations of the company's most innovative projects, and 15 stands showcasing all of France Télévisions' trades and expertise. To engage all employees, the company also organized a takeover of its Twitter account for the day, giving three interns the opportunity to share their insights on the initiatives. The InnoDay was a day when France Télévisions' innovation efforts truly took flight. As Kati Bremme, director of innovation and foresight and editor-in-chief of Méta-Media, reminded attendees, innovation is at the heart of the company's DNA.
